David E. Butts, DMD - Dentist
Dr. Butts was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC, where he has traced about 150 years of family heritage. He graduated from the Spartanburg Day School in 1997, and received his BS in mechanical engineering from USC in 2001. He then attended grad school at Georgia Tech, funded by a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and completed his MS in mechanical engineering in 2003. After some years of practicing and teaching engineering, Dr. Butts discovered a passion for dentistry and attended the MUSC College of Dental Medicine. He practiced dentistry in Columbus, NC, for several years before acquiring the practice of Dr. Elzie L. Tate in 2018 and proceeding under the banner of Wellspring Family Dental, PA.
Dr. Butts is committed to continuing education. He attends many advanced courses each year to enhance his skills to better serve the dental needs of his patients and provide them with a gentle and comfortable experience. Dr. Butts is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the South Carolina Dental Association, Phi Beta Kappa, and Tau Beta Pi.
Dr. Butts lives in Spartanburg with his wife, Kristie, and their spunky flame-haired daughter, Sadie Grace. Dr. and Mrs. Butts are active members of the Seed Committee for The Gathering Church in Spartanburg. He also enjoys family time, hiking, RVing, tinkering with old cars, engineering new solutions, and engaging in men's ministry through his church.
Fun genealogical facts: Dr. Butts’ grandfather, Carneze B. Butts, was the principal of the sole elementary school in Union, SC until his passing in 1946. His paternal great-great-grandfather, T. J. Trimmier, was a publisher who printed The Spartanburg Herald from its founding in 1872 until his passing in 1898. His great-grandfather, Mark Twain Gwinn, founded Dixie Shoe Works on N. Church Street in 1943 and operated it until his passing in 1972.
Sharla Migala - Dental Hygienist
Sharla has been a Registered Dental Hygienist for 15 years, and has been with this office since 2017. She enjoys getting to know her patients, as well as educating them about minimally invasive preventative dentistry and hygiene. She lives in Rutherfordton and grew up in Cliffside, NC. She and her husband have two children, and they are devoted to their two little grandchildren. In her free time, Sharla enjoys music, travel, RV-ing, and hanging out with her family. Sharla is a valued member of our team, and is much loved and complimented by her patients for her friendly attitude and gentle yet thorough touch.
Allyson Norris - Dental Hygienist
Allyson has been in the dental profession for her entire career. She started out as an assistant, but then returned to school and has served as a Registered Dental Hygienist for the last 22 years. She joined Wellspring part-time in early 2019. She loved going to the dentist as a child, and decided to dedicate her career to dental health. She says, “I care about the people I help through educating and caring for their oral health.” She was born and raised in Inman, SC. She and her husband have 2 daughters, 3 grandsons, and 1 granddaughter. Her favorite sport is golf. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, playing the piano, shopping, and spending time with her family—especially her grandbabies. GO TIGERS!
Melissa Bradley - insurance coordinator
Melissa has been in the dental profession for 29 years and has been the smiling, friendly face of this office since 2004. She loved going to the dentist and orthodontist in high school, and started out cleaning instruments for her orthodontist. After completing her dental assisting degree, she served as a chairside assistant for a while before transitioning into a specialized role as insurance coordinator. She and her husband live in Boiling Springs and have two adult sons. She enjoys playing with her four grandkids, spending time with her family, crafts, going to the lake and the beach, going to church, and serving the Lord. She loves helping others and giving encouragement where needed.
Gina Alwine - dental assistant
Gina is a dental assistant who has been in the profession for 18 years and has been a familiar face in this office since 2003. She says, “I knew I wanted to work in the medical field, but couldn’t decide on which profession. I always loved going to the dentist and orthodontist, so I chose to go to Spartanburg Technical College for the DA program. I fell in love with the curriculum. It fascinated me, and I loved working with and helping patients. I can honestly say after doing this for 18 years I still love what I do, especially my patients!” She was born and raised in Woodruff, SC. In her free time, she enjoys taking the boat out on the lake with her husband and two sons. One of her hobbies is making custom and personalized graphics for shirts, cups, and decals. GO TIGERS!
Katherine Velis - dental assistant
Katherine is a bilingual certified dental assistant who has been with Wellspring since June 2018. She received her training and degree from Spartanburg Community College. She was born in El Salvador, but raised in Linden, NJ before moving to Spartanburg. Katherine loves animals, and also works part time as a veterinarian’s assistant. She started out in dental hygiene for the vet office, and found that she loved it, so she decided to go back to school and make a career of dentistry. She enjoys educating people about oral health, as well as applying the latest in technology to protecting smiles. When she is not working, she enjoys traveling, watching the New York Giants, and spending time with her two sons and stepson.
